The Bar Council
The Bar Council is the professional membership body for barristers in England and Wales and discharges its regulatory functions through the independent Bar Standards Board. The Bar Council is seeking to recruit a Research Manager to lead a team of three advising on the conduct, collation and evaluation of research on matters pertaining to the barrister profession across the representational and regulatory functions. This will include formulating research questions, placing research contracts, data collection, interpretation and processing, data management and data analyses, using statistical packages and the production of reports for internal and external distribution. In managing a high quality research programme, the role will support the production of evidence based regulatory and representational policies.
While reporting to the Director of Central Services for line management purposes, the role will have lines of accountability for delivery to the Chief Executive and Directors of both the BSB and Representation and Policy.
The role will require an individual with a good Honours degree and a qualification in statistics. You should have knowledge of a wide range of research methodologies and research project management. Significant experience of commissioning, interpreting and presenting research projects is required and having done so in a legal field would be a distinct advantage. A track record exercising sound judgement and intellectual rigour in conducting and interpreting research is essential.
You will be experienced in policy development, briefing at Board level and producing work programmes against set targets. You will be skilled in the use of statistical software packages and the analysis of data.
Familiarity with the work of the barrister profession, experience of working with a wide range of organisations and a legal qualification would be highly desirable.
